The majority of people think that social work is a job, a profession where only highly trained and experienced social workers can contribute their skills to pursue social welfare and well being of people in the society.

 

Many people think that the only way to be involved or participate in social work, is only by having bachelors degree or masters degree in social work. Most think that you have to be registered and licensed to be a social worker. That is only the technical aspect it, but that is not what is social work all about.

 

Any means of helping people is considered social work. Giving an advice to someone who is in deep problem, allowing a homeless person to stay in your house for a couple of days, assisting handicaps when they are crossing the streets, telling children not to get involved with drugs, donating money for local food bank funds, these are the things that social workers do and this is what is social work all about.

 

You can contribute to the welfare of the people in your society regardless if you have bachelor’s degree in social work or not. It does not matter what your profession is, what matters is your intention to help. You may not be working inside centers for families, courts or government offices. But you can definitely join out reach programs lead by different churches. You can also participate in feeding programs in your communities. Invite some of your friends and visit an orphanage to bring small presents to the orphans. You can also encourage doctors in your community to promote and join medical mission.
